About Journey To The Sun:
I enjoyed this game a lot, I have had my eyes on it since I got to play it at EGX London and speak to a developer there who showed great passion so ideally this stuck out most over the industry dominating titles I was excited for. Now onto the actual game, it is short and sweet, it doesn’t overstay its welcome and has a very rewarding sense of progression. You can just blast through the game collecting the upgrades and move onto the next section but the most fun was returning to previous areas and using my new upgrades to obtain items that was previously unreachable. The game starts out weird yet charming and opens up to a beautiful playground for you to use all what is given to you to your hearts content. I 100% recommend this game for a casual experience just to kick back and enjoy the gorgeous art style the team have created and you can even bring a friend along for the journey making the experience the more the merrier. I have three big complaints that force me into not recommending the game. First, the combat. It’s awful. I mean, it really, really feels like it was tacked onto a explorative-platforming game because they thought at the last second, “people have to fight alien wildlife!” The dodging mechanic is the worst part. So many times, I would try to dodge an attack and my character would crouch. They’re the same button. The enemies continuously respawn and they are more of an annoyance than anything. The second complaint is the randomness of the collectibles. You do need to collect a few to progress the story. Some are hidden in plain sight, others require abilities that you have to unlock and then there are the ones that feel like someone closed their eyes and dropped the collectible on the map and you need to play Mission Impossible to reach it. My third and last complaint is the unlocking of the abilities. This is a fundamental part of the game. You have to not only find the ability in the game, but you have to then have the resources to unlock it. Then you have to be in the right “exploration tier” to unlock it. How do you unlock the exploration tiers? By doing achievement-esque stunts like falling 50 meters and using your double-jump to survive or tagging 3 different aggressive monsters for research and so on. These tasks should be as they sound. Achievements. Not a requirement to access skills in your skill tree.
